Why It Is Good To Think Of How To Start A School Garden

By Carolyn Snyder

A school garden is a type you can find in a school compound. It needs the help of some workers on the field to start one. However, students can also be made to know how to start a school garden by making them assist the laborers as they work. As the laborers or their teachers tell them what to do, they also partake in the advantages of the exercise.

One of the main benefits this bring is the supply of food. Using a big garden to cultivate would translate into an abundant harvest for the children's supplies. Apart from the children, some teachers and the school heads will also be beneficiaries of the products. If rare plant products were cultivated, it will grant the students the opportunity to know what they look like.

If it is a boarding college, they will benefit from it a great deal. Even if food condiments are expensive in the market, the students will have something to eat. Assuming it is just fruits or a particular food crop that is planted, they will be better nourished because of the gardens.

As fewer foods are now purchased from the market, the school saves more money. Their savings can be utilized for other important aspects of school administration that can make them more successful. Even if they still have to make purchases, they are still better off with a garden.

The students will also learn how to manage a farm. What their Agric teachers teach in class will be better understood as they practicalize their lectures on the gardens. The pictures which they see in their textbooks are better understood in real life because of the garden. They can hardly forget the planting and harvesting times for the crops they cultivate.

This can make them become self-dependent in the future. Their knowledge of agriculture can be transformed into a love for it and as that happens, they voluntarily set up big farms to provide food products which their immediate community will enjoy. In the same vein, it will help to reduce the poverty level in the place they operate as the farms attract workers.

Doing this also benefits the students by making them to work hard the more. Instead of seeing farm work as something stressful, they rather see it as a blessing. Their level of fitness improves as they become more muscular. They can hardly turn out to be obese if they continue teamwork after schooling.

Students who work together in a garden are more cooperative in the classroom and help each other achieve their targets even after graduation. The bond increases and those who think they are stronger in certain areas are humble enough to help the weaker ones. Because there is love among them, nobody tries to gain undue advantage over others. Teachers in such a school who love their calling find this as an opportunity to impact lives. What they cannot discuss in the classroom with a student can be talked about in the open where other students won't understand what is going on.
