movin on up
cats love routine, so moving houses or apartments can be a nightmare for them. follow the jump for tips to ease the transition.
first, figure out when you're going to move your cats. one idea is to move your pet first. that way you won't have to worry about tripping over her while moving, or worse, accidentally letting her outside.
set up a sanctuary room in the new place. if you're short on space, a bathroom will suffice - least amount of furniture means the least amount of chaos. and make sure all the cat stuff is packed together - you wouldn't want to set up the litter box only to discover you forgot the litter. let kitty hang out in this quiet space until you are settled.
calming agents go a long way in helping to ease these situations. a pheromone product like feliway sprayed in your cat's carrier and around the new place can help your cat relax. rescue remedy and calming treats work from the inside out to de-stress.
another good idea is to make sure your cat has a collar with ID or a microchip with current information, just in case he were to get out in the new neighborhood and be disoriented.
above all, have fun! don't worry, be happy. it's hippie christmas! now go find some neat stuff on the side of the road.

update on emmi
just yesterday her previous owners dropped their claim to her and settled out of court with shelter from the storm.
emmi's foster family plans to adopt her immediately.
so, what do you guys think? is this the right end to the story?
delaware rocks!
yesterday the state of delaware signed into law the biggest legislation toward no kill in history. the law not only mandates cooperation between shelters and rescues but also makes convenience killing illegal. w00t!
wayne and garth better change that whole "delaware" bit now.

massachusetts agrees. they recently banned devocalization surgery, a procedure which cuts or removes an animal's vocal cords, rendering them permanently unable to bark or meow. it can also cause serious health problems - not to mention your pet would no longer be able to alert you if something is wrong.
anyone who breaks the law for non-medical reasons may be punished by fines and up to five years in prison.

with the tabling of oreo's law until next year the shelter system of new york city has descended into chaos. any steps toward no kill have been nullified by the same bureaucratic BS that have made US shelters the number one killer of cats for decades.
meanwhile, the state of delaware just passed a bill that will put them on the quick path to no kill - making euthanasia a last resort of any animal that can not be treated, adopted out, or transfered to a rescue. big news and a cause for hope.

uw animal research cited again
seven months after the university was cited with 20 animal welfare violations a return inspection by the USDA finds 6 repeat-violations, from expired medication to unnecessarily painful tests. with possible fines of up to $10,000 per day the university is going to scramble to get themselves out of this one.
yet, the testing goes on... because "monkeys are not us."

this is obviously a case where the couple were in over their heads but is hoarding the same as intentional cruelty? what do you guys think?
and what happened to all those other charges? child neglect is pretty serious to be dropped so quickly.

alderman mike verveer has proposed a city ordinance that would make all events requiring street-use permits off-limits to all dogs.
the farmer's market is already a no-dog zone but this new ordinance would include other quintessential madtown events like the willy street fair.
then who would we give our free porkies to?

san francisco is considering a ban on the sale of live animals through retail stores, including hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, mogwai, etc. fish are not included (neither are batteries). it's a push to keep small animals from ending up at the city shelters after the cuteness has worn off.
what do you guys think? another step toward achieving a no kill community? or going too far?
