In terms of its temperament, the breed is often marketed as calm, docile, and floppy. The breed is known to be excessively docile to a point that some people propose that it is as a result of genetic mutation. The excessive docility makes the cat to be thought as incapable of feeling pain. In reaction to that, some breeders have started to breed away from docility in the breed. Breeders who are actively involved in breeding away from docility are based in Britain.

Ragdolls have a relaxed temperament, a gentle nature, and generally lap cats. Their level of intelligence is very high coupled with much affection for owners. The blue eyes in this breed is caused by the gene responsible for point coloration. In cat shows, cats with eyes that have more tense shades of the blue color are favored. The body of the cat is composed of a plush coat and guard hairs. The coat experiences reduced shedding and matting because of the lack of an undercoat.

Six main colors of ragdolls exist. The colors include chocolate, cream, dilutes of chocolate, red, lilac, and seal. Tortoiseshell and lynx variations also exist besides the six main colors. There exists three coat patterns for ragdoll cats. The three patterns are bicolor, mitted, and colorpoint. In colorpoint, extremities of the cats are darkened. Tails, nose, paws, and ears are the parts that are mostly darkened in colopoint. Mitted pattern is the same as colorpoint because extremities darken. The difference between the two is that mitted patterns include white abdomens and paws.

Bicolor coat pattern incorporate some level of complexity. Some of the patterns that it is comprised of include white abdomen, white legs, inverted V letter on the face, and white-colored back in some cases.
