Dog Agility Tips For Pet Owners To Know

By Robin Setser

Dog agility, for those that don't know, is a type of sport that dogs can get involved in to test their speed against other canines. It's a popular sport that pet owners should be aware of, especially if their animal friends tend to have ample energy to spare. What should you do in order to prepare your pet for the sport in question? If you follow these tips, you can rest easy knowing that your dog will be able to perform with ease.

Pet owners can get involved in dog agility in many ways, starting with an understanding of the rules. Like with any sport, dog agility has a series of guidelines that must be adhered to by those that are involved. Keep in mind that different organizations will have unique rules, so study as diligently as possible. This will make understanding dog agility easier. This should provide the best start in the eyes of companies such as Assisi Animal Health.

Next, you should prepare your dog for the various obstacles associated with this sport. One of the trickiest is the tire jump, which makes sense given the narrow opening of the tire itself. There's only so much space that can be allowed, so you must work your dog so that they can build up the courage to tackle the obstacle in question. Prior training goes a long way, but don't become so involved to the point where your pet may suffer an injury.

While you're training your pet, there's a chance that they will experience some kind of injury. Fortunately, you'll be able to detect this by carefully examining their behavior. For the sake of argument, let's say that your pet is having more difficulty moving than they should. In a situation like this, you should consult your vet. No matter how careful you may be during training, signs like this should be noted as early as possible.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, understand that dog agility is meant to be fun. It's a sport, after all, and those that compete should be able to enjoy themselves. Furthermore, pet owners should be cordial with one another so that they can make the overall experience better for others. Instead of taking this sport so seriously, relax a little. This will make enjoying the sport of dog agility that much easier.
