As they carry special old memories, they bring you a good feeling. However, these timepieces come with a few challenges. Old clocks tend to suffer from being closer to heat sources as high temperatures can damage important components. For this reason, avoid hanging it near windows or fireplaces where the heat can get to it directly. To add on this, you ought to avoid hanging them in humid areas or any other damp places. With time, the moisture will damage different parts and even cause corrosion.

The exterior glass should not be cleaned directly. When using a window cleaner, it is recommended that you do not spray it directly onto the glass. This is because the cleaner constitutes of alcohol which is harmful to the shellac. To clean the glass effectively, spray the cleaner onto a towel or piece of paper. Old timepieces feature a shellac finish which is valuable and should not be tampered with.

After some time, the watch may not run well or not at all. Check the inside and determine the moving speed of the oscillator. The problem may be too much dust. Use a blower which can remove all the dust within no time. If this does not solve the problem, search for a technician as there may be a complex problem you cannot take care of in the interior. Leaving the dust will only do more destruction.

The time which the piece should be oiled or serviced depends on type, environment age and standard of previous work done. Taking it to be oiled by a professional is important. This is because the different parts require different types of oils. Using one type of oil can make it worse.

If you want to shift locations with the watch, ensure it is well packed. As you may not know how to handle it, search for a technician to do the work. Once it is well packed, moving it like other furniture will be effortless. If you do so without packing it well, problems such as chains coming off the sprockets can be realized making the watch not to run. Hiring a technician is much cheaper when compared to repairing it after the damage is done.

It is done by moving its minute hand counter-clockwise until you see that the proper time has been displayed on the dial.
