In terms of physical characteristics, the American bulldog is a canine that looks strong, very stocky and well built and has a large head. It is much bigger than its English cousin and has much larger and longer legs. This was a breed that was specifically developed by working migrants who assisted American farmers and ranchers in getting rid of feral pigs and other pests alongside other several jobs on the farm.

Historically there are a few variations of the American bulldog, but generally speaking only two main ones really exist to date. The more common is called the Bully type and it usually has a shorter muzzle and is much larger and heavier in build. The other one, called the Standard or Performance, has a larger muzzle and a much more square head. Mixing both together one can get one called the hybrid.

Although this dog is classified as a working dog, it is quite good to have around children as long as it has been trained to socialize earlier on. When it is still young it will be somewhat aloof and unapproachable but this will change later on as it get older and mellower. Prepare to give it a lot of attention as it has quite an emotional personality.

Even though the British and French bulldog varieties are quite used to sedentary living, this breed is not and it will take quite some time getting used to. This is because it was originally bred for farm work and tasks It will need to have daily walks plus some space to frolic and stretch its legs in.

Should you have set your mind on this dog, be prepared for slobber, and lots of it. This is particularly true if you get the bully type. Either way, both types are easier to groom as they have generally smooth and short coats. They also shed fur very moderately so you will not have much problem with regards to having fur all over the place.

On average the lifespan for this breed is about ten to sixteen years. Most of the time they will live healthy and active lives but they will be prone to some complications. These complications are bone cancer, cherry eye and hip dysplacia. Do keep in touch also with your veterinarian as they will need regular upkeep and maintenance and also to combat the more than regular bout with certain allergies.
