Tips For Choosing Cavachons For Adoption

By Catherine Cook

Appearance is the number one thing most people are drawn to when looking for a dog to adopt, although many others factors should also be considered. They should also take into account the breed's general behavioral traits and health needs. When thinking about Cavachons for adoption, it would be beneficial to know as much about this type of dog as possible to make sure they are suitable for one's current living conditions.

Anyone who is interested in this type of dog needs to realize that they will probably not ever be allowed to compete in an AKC event. The reason for this is that the Cavachon is a designer breed - meaning it is the end result of blending two separate pure breeds together. The point of their creation was to take the best traits of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and mix them with those of the Bichon Frise.

Anyone desiring this breed should be ready to make a substantial investment because they could be so difficult to obtain. The majority of litters are produced using one parent from each of two pure breeds, creating first generation puppies for which people are often place on waiting lists to adopt. Second generation litters are possible, however this does tend to downgrade the quality of their desired characteristics.

These are small dogs belonging to the Toy breed category. When fully grown, they typically reach no more than 13 inches in height, and weigh between 12 and 18 pounds. This makes them ideal for individuals who may live in small homes or apartments.

A pup who is a good mix will have many commonly shared characteristics of the two parent breeds. Some of these are the short snout, the soft silky fur, and especially the overly large and expressive eyes. It is these adorable looks that play a big part in making the Cavachon a much sought-after dog.

Anyone considering adopting a Cavachon needs to be aware that a significant bit of attention should to be paid to their grooming needs. Although they do have low shed hypoallergenic fur, it does grow rather fast and it may become dirty or matted easily. Brushing is something that will need to be done daily and trimming should be done regularly.

Before bringing a Cavachon into the home, a person needs to make sure that they have ample time to dedicate to giving it plenty of attention and exercise. Although typically well-behaved, they do form a very close bond with their humans and can become a bit anxious when separated from them. For the best results, it is highly recommended that socialization start as a puppy and obedience training begin as early as possible with follow-through being consistent.

Each individual will have to do their own research when it comes to finding a puppy provider because no official listing of quality Cavachon breeders is available. Joining forums with other owners of this breed can provide valuable feedback on which facilities ethically produced good litters. It is recommended that one find the time to look into how a breeder treats their animals, as well as their experience in this field, before making such a huge investment.
