By Patricia Miller

Veterinarian is a term used to refer to medical specialists who specialize in treating, preventing, and diagnosing medical conditions that affect animals. They deal with both domestic as well as wild animals. The colloquial vet is often a shortened form of the term, which is also used commonly. Other names for these professionals include veterinary surgeons and veterinary physicians. In Vancouver veterinary is the place where veterinarians work from.

In most countries, the use of the word veterinarian is under the regulation and protection of state laws. The laws prohibit the use of the word or engagement in activities pertaining to the profession if one is not licensed to work as a vet. As such, it is illegal for one who is unqualified to use the term or treat animals. Such protection keeps consumers safe from fraudulent behavior and misrepresentation by people who pose as qualified vets.

The term veterinarian was first appeared in 1946 in a print written by someone named Thomas Browne. The word is a Latin word that translates to working animals in the English language. In North America and other countries that use American English, the term veterinarian is used more commonly. On the other hand, in countries that are part of the Commonwealth of Nations the term veterinary surgeon is used more commonly. The same is true in countries that formed part of the British Empire.

Veterinarians work in a number of settings, but more commonly they work in animals hospitals and private clinics. Since these professionals may specialize according to the size and type of animals they treat, those whose focus is in small domestic animals work in clinic or office environments. Those who focus on large livestock like goats, horses, and cattle work on ranches or farms.

These practitioners also work with a team that consists of Veterinarian Technologists and Technicians. The vets supervise this team when working. The team conducts medical tests and handles emergency procedures among several other tasks. Vets are can also be employed in various facilities. Some of these facilities include humane societies, military, wildlife facilities, food safety inspection facilities, diagnostic facilities, animal control facilities, biomedical facilities, and companies involved with production of foods and drugs..

To work in the capacity of a veterinary surgeon in the US, one must have a degree in Veterinary Medicine. DVM is the abbreviation used for the degree in common language. It is mandatory for one to have a pre-veterinary degree in any of the many courses for them to gain admission into doctorate programs. Some of those courses are Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Genetics, Biology, and Physiology. It takes 3-4 years to graduate with a pre-veterinary degree.

The job entails several duties. Some of the major ones include treating and dressing wounds, testing and vaccinating against diseases, prescribing medication, euthanizing animals, diagnosing and treating medical conditions, and examining health conditions. The job also involves operating medical equipment such as x-ray and MRI machines.

Several factors determine how much is earned by a veterinarian. Some of the factors that determine income are area of specialization, employer, location, and experience. Practitioners who are well established in the field and have several years of experience earn more than those joining the field. Similarly, income is higher in some places than others.
