The breeders of the respective types are responsible for the names bully and standard. These features make the American bulldog one of the biggest breeds in existence among dogs.

In terms of the temperament, the dog is highly social, confident, and active. When around members of the family, they relax and appear at ease. They are highly emotional, which makes giving them a lot of attention necessary. Untrained and non-socialized puppies tend to show aggression towards people they do not know. However, this can be controlled by training and socializing them adequately. The behavior of the dog towards animals and human beings ir reliant on early socialization and training.

The lifespan of a typical individual is between ten and sixteen years. Through most of the lifespan of the dog, it tends to remain physically active, strong, and healthy. Specific health problems have been known to affect certain genetic lines. Other health problems affect the whole breed regardless of genetic makeup.

The whole breed is affected by health problems such as elbow dysplasia, ectropion, neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, hip dysplasia, ACL tears, cherry eye, and bone cancer. DNA tests can help to screen for the presence of certain health conditions.
