Things To Know About Cavachon Pups

By Raymond Brooks

A dog makes a terrific companion because they are forever loyal, always ready to comfort, very entertaining, and have a gift for making a person feel loved. However, when deciding to adopt a pet, it is best to choose one whose activity levels, typical behavioral traits, personality characteristics, grooming needs, and health concerns, are suited for one's living conditions and lifestyle. If looking for a cute designer breed possessing many attractive qualities and adaptability, Cavachon pups may be the answer.

Created my mixing a pure specimen of each of the Toy breeds, Bichon Frise and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, these dogs are quite rare and difficult to breed. Acceptable results are often achieved when mating two first generation Cavachons but some of the more desirable qualities may be diminished when breeding subsequent generations. As a mixed breed, most major or national kennel clubs do not recognize them and have not set any official authoritative standards for them.

At approximately thirteen inches in height and weighing roughly eighteen pounds fully grown, this breed is rather small. They come in a range of colors though primarily the are various shades of peach, brown, and white. Listed as hypoallergenic, their coats are curly or slightly wavy, thick, soft, and silky, shed only minimally and produce practically no dander.

They should have an lifespan of between 15-20 years when given the proper care and regular checkups to maintain their health. Issues that typically plague small dogs such as heart murmurs, eye ulcerations resulting from hair rubbing against their eyes, and flea allergies, are common. Fur tends to grow into their ears which need to get weekly cleanings to avoid infections.

Cavachons are very friendly, gentle, affectionate, intelligent, social, and energetic but not hyperactive. They require daily walks or activity to burn off some of their extra energy though they are generally very well behaved indoors. These dogs form very deep bonds with their humans and are most content when in the company of attentive people or other household pets.

As far as grooming requirements go, this breed does have some fairly high maintenance needs. Even though they shed very little, they are rather hairy and their coats have a tendency to become matted. One may find that if they do not make the time to brush their pet on a daily basis, they could end up paying for routine professional trimmings and treatments.

This is an intelligent breed and the dogs are relatively fast learners when training is done consistently. It is best to begin their socialization and behavioral education while very young so that they do not form negative habits first that will have to be overcome. The sooner their obedience conditioning starts, the better the results will be.

This small breed is a great choice for any individual who has allergies, has limited living space, or travels with their pet often. These dogs are wonderful with children, the elderly, and other types of household pet. Cavachons will provide their owners with lots of love and affection, endless loyalty, and years of comfort and companionship.
