Many of us veteran pet owners would sometimes want to go do something put of the mainstream and adopt or take an exotic kind of pet, or one that is not so ordinary, into our lives. Should this come to the subject of cats it will also be true. You may be thinking of getting a safari cat after you saw a safari cats for sale sign earlier. Before you do so, please read on in this article so that you be better informed for a final decision if ever.

Origin of the safari cat is when the Geoffroy's Cat was crossed cross with the domestic shorthair. The hybrid is the result called the safari cat. The Geoffroy's cat is a wild cat that is somewhat related to the South American ocelot. Due to the differing number of chromosomal pairs in wild and domesticated cats, it can be a very difficult to have a successful pairing. Breeding was first done in the 1970s.

This breed can be quite expensive due to their difficulty to breed, especially with first generation or F1 cats. This is because the male Geoffroy's Cat may sometimes attack and kill the female Domestic shorthair. With successful breeding they are slightly larger than the Geoffroy's Cat but they also have a much docile and calmer temperament and are described as delightfully gentle creatures.

According to TICA, or The International Cat Association registry, there are only about 70 owners of this exotic pet. Exotic is a term given when a breed is a result of the cross breeding of a wild parent with a domesticated one. This breed has the same distinction as Chausi, Bengals and Savannah cats as being exotic, but is considered as the "Rolls Royce of Exotic Cats".

They do look very sleek and long, making them tall, and also very svelte. Their colors range according to the region that they come from and can range anywhere from shades of deep orange to black and silver grey.

Maintenance wise it is not difficult to look after this breed as they are fairly low maintenance. They do not require any additional care or attention. They can be fed normal cat food, but for most owners they will prefer to give them a special diet. This diet is usually a mixed diet that is balanced with raw meat.

This breed is a very active breed and more suited for more active owners. It is naturally curious of its surroundings and anything it comes in contact with. Due to this it can get into trouble sometimes.

As for temperament, when it is properly socialized, results can be quite remarkable. Many will say that this is the feline version of the dog, it is immediately loyal to family members and wary of strangers. It is prone to pouting when left out and learn simple to complex commands. It is also a cat that is quite long lived that can live up to 20 years given proper care.
