Non Shedding Hypoallergenic Large Dogs Make Amazing Pets

By Amy Perry

Owning a pet is an experience that everyone deserves the opportunity to have. Sadly, for many people - especially those who suffer from allergies - this is something that has always seemed like an impossibility. Thankfully, there are several different breeds of non shedding hypoallergenic large dogs from which these in individuals can choose.

A pet allergy does not mean the person is allergic to dog, per se, but rather their reaction is because of the dander created as their fur falls out. Certain breeds are missing this genetic factor because they do not shed normally, which means that they will not cause allergic symptoms. Those who prefer larger pets will have no trouble finding one that fits their ideals.

The first of the larger breeds that comes to mind when thinking about allergy free options is the Standard Poodle. With a coat that hardly ever loses strands, is curly, densely packed, and thick, they are wonderful - requiring only occasional professional grooming to stay well maintained. Other appealing features are their extreme intelligence and loyalty.

Another favorite in this category is the noble Airedale Terrier. Perhaps their most distinguishing feature is their amazing double coat, which is made up of an under layer of soft fur topped by a layer of coarse strands with will need to be hand stripped at least once a year in order to stay clean. They have remarkable intelligence and discipline, which has historically made them well suited for police duty and as efficient rodent hunters.

Far bigger than the miniatures but equally as wonderful, are the allergy friendly Giant Schnauzers. They have practically no dander production but to keep their fur looking neat and clean, it needs regular brushing, frequent trims, and to be hand stripped about once a month. An ample amount of exercise is a must for these animals who make wonderful guardians who are extremely protective of their human family.

Komondors are huge sheepdogs that actually look so much like the flocks they were bred to tend. They are perhaps one of the easiest no shed breeds to care for because their coarse dreadlocks never need to be brushed and hardly ever require trimming. Unfortunately, being completely white means that their coat shows dirt more than most, so they do need frequent bathing and those long, thick cords seem to take forever to dry.

The Irish Water Spaniel is the largest of its type and they are easy on the allergies, fun loving, energetic, easily trained, and eager to please their humans. Their distinguishing features include webbed feet and a waterproof coat that is perfect for a dog that is appropriately named for its love of swimming. They have thick curls that do not shed, but require weekly brushing and regular trims to keep it neat.

There is a bevy of larger breed canines that are ready to grace the homes of allergy sufferers. They will each have their individual traits and features that will appeal to different people. Aside from their increased size, the one thing they all share is the lack of dander and low shed factor, which is why they are a perfect option for those who though pet ownership would never happen due to allergic reactions.
